OUR STORY
First, I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to PfunkyGirl in any way. You are the best supporters an entrepreneur could ask for. Second, I want to put out a disclosure for the transparency you will receive from me as the Owner and operator of Pfunky Girl Essentials.
With that said, I will start by being brutally honest! The whole natural hair thing was an accident for me. When my mom passed, I couldn’t afford to keep perms in my head, so my natural journey began. It was not the most comfortable journey for me in the beginning. Heck, I’m still learning different tricks and tactics to this day. The rough start to my natural hair journey is only a fraction of how Pfunky Girl started.
In 2010 my mom was diagnosed with a rare head and neck cancer, and the doctors couldn’t give us any answers as to what caused a tumor to pop up on a perfectly healthy 50-year old ladies tongue out of nowhere. The lack of solutions made me furious because I needed and wanted answers. I began to research everything my mom did and ate. While studying, I came across the effects most beauty products cause to women’s health. Especially African American women. I’m not saying beauty products caused my mom to contract cancer by any means, but my girl stayed in someone’s salon chair.
Anyone who knew my mom knew she was a diva! She loved getting her hair and nails done; she stayed stocked up on lip gloss, she loved helping others and feeding them too. Since her passing, I’ve yearned to do something to honor her legacy! Soooo, I decided to create natural beauty products for all the divas in the world.
After discovering the harmful ingredients used to produce beauty products, I started to research natural and organic ingredients that weren’t harmful to our health. At this point, I still wasn’t pleased with my natural hair journey or my skin. In 2016 I decided to isolate myself and learn to love myself for the dope person I am. When I began to embrace my hair and skin and my spiritual beliefs, I grew to love myself and others more than ever before.
Fast forward to the summer of 2019. I loved my hair, but I still wasn’t pleased with the results I was getting. I loved my skin, but I wasn’t delighted with the products that left my skin dry and flaky. At this point, I had to make something happen. I grabbed a few natural ingredients and oils I had laying around the house and started mixing different recipes for the perfect moisturizer. After trying the moisturizer on myself, my hair stayed moisturized, which helped define my actual curl pattern. My skin started to glow like no other. My family and friends were awesome “Guinea Pigs” and reviewers. I saw how the results added a new glow to their hair and skin. I also noticed the result of them embracing their natural hair and skin more than ever.
My mission is to provide natural and organic products that encourage African American women to embrace their natural beauty! Trust, I’m not knocking weave and makeup at all. I enjoy getting dolled up every once in a while. However, there is no greater beauty than being your natural self and letting your curls hang; however, they may feel today. It’s equivalent to taking your bra off after a long day of work! #freethenipples #freethecurls
I decided to name my company Pfunky Girl because “my funky boy” or “my funky girl” was one of moms many greetings. I placed a P in front of Funky to give the company name her initials(Patricia Gleaves). My mom was the originator of the saying Pfunky Girl. So, I’ve put meaning behind it. I hope you all enjoy our 100% natural and organic products handcrafted with a little extra TLC.
